Installation notes

Java WebStart

The tools are launched over the network via the WebStart application that is part of the Java 1.5 installation. You have to download Java 1.5 (JRE 5.0 or J2SEE 5.0)from the Sun Developer Network (WebStart is included).

There have been reports of problems when using a mixed installation of java 1.4 an java 1.5. Both 1.4 and 1.5 install their own version of webstart, but they seem to be unable to view each others installed applications.

In case of problems we advise you to make sure that once 1.5 is installed you also use the webstart of 1.5 (javaws) which you will find in the same directory as the other 1.5 java executables.

By default the webstart of 1.5 takes over the www proxy settings of the www-browser. If you have problems that webstart cannot download any files, you may try to change this setting in the webstart preferences panel.

There is a known issue with Java Webstart on the Mac after the applying the Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4. It can be easily fixed by going to the directory /System/Library/CoreServices/ in the Finder. After opening that directory, Webstart should function properly again.

IMDI Metadata versions

The tools use the IMDI metadata set as described in IMDI Metadata Elements for Session Descriptions.

Tools for old IMDI versions 1.8 and 1.9 are no longer supported. We advise to upgrade all imdi files to the new version 3.0. The IMDI Editor is able to convert previous versions to the new standard one by one. If you need assistance to convert large amounts of imdi files please contact us. Upgrade and clean-up scripts are available.

IMDI Editor

The memory problems with the IMDI Editor have been solved. It is still possible to force an out of memory condition but it requires a large number of very big files.

In general no support can be given unless you use the tools within the context of a cooperative project with the MPI for Psycholinguistics that use the IMDI metadata environment like ECHO, INTERA and DOBES.

We are grateful for any bug reports you send us. If you are an official partner use a MPI Bug Report. Others are invited to report bugs or request features by sending an email to imditools@mpi.nl
