Before installation of ELAN, a number of requirements have to be met:

- Installation of Java 1.5 (or higher) and (optionally) Java Webstart
(These are pre-installed on Mac OS X. The installer versions for Windows and Linux include a Java Runtime Environment) - Mac OS 10.4 or higher for the Mac version
- Installation of the MS Arial Unicode font (optional)
