MPEG-4 (from mts) in Windows 7
ELAN crashes as soon as I try to use my MPEG-4-files. Is there a way to solve this? I have already tried re-installing ELAN and downloading an older version; it didn't work.
For now I use MPEG-1-versions instead, and check for finer details of non-verbal interaction in Pinnacle (using the mts-files), but my colleague has a Mac and I'm afraid there will be difficulties in working together with transcripts and analysis.

I tried this:

I was having this same problem. The video file I was using was an .mp4. I finally got it fixed by going to Edit >> Preferences >> Platform/OS and selecting QuickTime for Java as my Media Framework, instead of the default Java - DirectShow Framework. Hope this helps.[/quote]
and it does make a differance, but not a very helpful one. Now ELAN does not shut down, but the initializing process seems to be endless. :-(
Re: MPEG-4 (from mts) in Windows 7
Currently ELAN uses the Windows DirectShow framework for its main native media framework and that doesn't support MPEG-4. Microsoft has created the Microsoft Media Foundation and on Windows 7 this foundation supports MPEG-4. We are currently trying to make that accessible in ELAN by creating a "software bridge" between Java (ELAN) and the M. Media foundation. That's quite a bit of work; we hope to know within a few months whether this will work or not.
In order to successfully use QuickTime in ELAN on Windows, QT needs to be installed before ELAN. So, if you have installed QT after ELAN, you'll have to re-install ELAN. In principle that can work; mp4 in ELAN on Windows by using QuickTime.
