Possible to transcribe annotation while it's playing?

Hello
Does anyone know if it's possible to enter an annotation in the 'Edit Annotation' box at the same time as the section is playing on loop?
Many thanks
Clare
Yes, it is possible to annotate when a selection is playing in a loop.

In Annotation mode, first open the edit annotation box and then play the selection in loop mode. This will play the selection in loop mode while the 'edit box' is opener entering annotation. But if you switch to next annotation(i.e) open the next annotation edit box, the player stops playing. Once the next annotation edit box is opened, click again the play selection button to start playing.

In Transcription mode, load the annotation table with the tiers you want to annotate and select the options ' Loop Mode' and 'Automatic playback of media'. This will allow you to enter a annotation while the player is playing in a loop and once you have entered a annotation click 'Enter' to edit the next annotation. Clicking enter will open the next annotation for editing and starts playing that segment in a loop automatically.

Hello Aarty

Thanks for your reply.

I've tried playing the recording while the 'edit annotation' box is open, but it doesn't seem to work. After opening the box, I click on the 'Play selection' icon on the toolbar and then try the shortcut 'shift + space', but neither work while the box was open. Am I doing something wrong?

I have a 7 minute long section of speech to transcribe and would like to transcribe it 10 seconds at a time on loop using the 'edit annotation' box i.e. highlight the first 10 seconds of the annotation, play it on loop, and transcribe it in the 'edit annotation' box while I listen to it, then repeat the process for the next 10 seconds, and so on. Is it possible to do this?

Many thanks
Clare
I couldn't reproduce this behavior you have mentioned. I could have a edit box open with a selection and play that selection by clicking the 'Play selection' icon on the toolbar and by using the shortcut key.

It is not very clear regarding annotations. Do you have a single annotation for 7 minutes or have annotations every 10 secs?

By saying 'Edit Annotation Box' did you mean the detached editor window or the inline edit text box on the same window?

Hi Aarty

Thanks again for replying to me. To answer your questions:
 • I mean the 'Detach Editor' pop-up box
 • I have many recordings of different speakers to transcribe, and sometimes there is a long stretch (e.g. 7 minutes long) of speech from a speaker during a recording which produces an unmanageable amount of text if it's not transcribed in the 'Detach Editor' box. So I wanted to know, first, if it's possible to transcribe at the same time as typing in the Detach Editor box. And second, if it is possible to do this, is it possible to listen on loop to only a 10 second section at a time of the 7 minute long stretch of speech and type in the Detach Editor box as I listen (I need to listen to a little bit at a time on loop and transcribe it as I hear it as I don't understand every word the first time I hear it)?
I hope I've managed to explain this clearly!

Many thanks
Clare

Hi Clare

It is very clear now. It sounds more like the 'step and repeat mode' which is now only available in the segmentation mode. I would add it to our wish list to add the 'step and repeat mode' in annotation and transcription mode.

It is possible to listen to 10 second in a loop and transcribe at the same time.
As i have already mentioned, doing this in transcription mode would be much faster than doing it in the annotation mode.

In transcription mode, you cant detach the edit box, but the edit box will grow as you type in and the complete text in the edit box is visible. Once you start editing an annotation in edit box, you just have to change the selection and play it in a loop, while the edit box is still open for you to type.

In annotation mode, you can still do it, but it is not the best recommend way. It requires a lot more of actions compared to the transcription mode. A way around would be,
1.Open the inline edit box of the (7 min) annotation
2.Then make a selection for 10 seconds(as needed) and play the selection in a loop.
3.Once the selection starts playing in a loop then detach the edit box.
4.Now type in the text in the box

when you want to make a new selection, commit the changes and close the edit box and repeat the steps from 1-4 for the new selection.

Hope this is clear. If you need more help, you can reply back to this message or you can also mail me to aarthy.somasundaram@mpi.nl

I am trying to do the same thing - transcribe long segments of speech, within a multi-speaker conversation. I wish the step-and-repeat mode were available in Transcribe and Annotation mode in order to not have to use a separate text editor while using the step-and-repeat as the audio player, then pasting the text into the segment.
Now, a short selection on loop would be an alternative, however I cannot make any selection in Transcribe mode, and if I select 10 secs audio in Annotation mode and switch to Transcribe it has the entire segment selected!!
How to listen ti 10 sec loop in Transcribe within a long segment?
Thanks!
