acute accent: foreign words

acute accent: foreign words
How do I put an acute accent on a vowel, for example, when typing foreign words in a mainly English transcription? There is probably something really simple that I have missed but I have not found it easy to work out how to do this.
Many thanks,

On a Mac you can type Option+E followed by the vowel. On Windows it depends on system settings whether you can use a Alt+xxx combination on the Numpad. If you only need a few vowels with accent you could memorize a few combinations, like Alt+0233 for "é" (which is an e with acute as one character!). Or you can locate the Combining Acute Accent in Character Map, copy it and paste it where you need it?

In most operating systems, including MacOS, Linux and Windows, you can have multiple keyboard layouts semi-active at the same time: You then use for example an icon in the task bar or a key combination to switch between them. A suitable keyboard layout for your case could be one which uses 'dead keys'. I think for example for 'USA international' layouts, this method is popular. I use such a layout to type Dutch, German, French and similar on a QWERTY keyboard (a German keyboard would have keys for umlauts but not for other accents). Basically you 'compose' the accented character by first typing ' or " or ~ or ` and then typing the character which will have the accent, e.g. ~n or "a and so on. The disadvantage is that to type e.g. " or ~ etc. itself, you have to type a space after it (or on some layouts, type " or ~ etc. twice). For me, that is acceptable, so I almost always stay within that combining / composing / dead key style international layout. However, I could also switch back and forth between international mode and plain USA / UK mode on the fly, using the task bar icon or hotkey. Note that some operating systems allow keeping different keyboard layouts for different windows on your desktop, but I am sure you will find a setting that suits you :-)
