Recently I encountered a problem from time to time when annotating some clips of mpeg1 format in ELAN 3.9.1 under Mac OS X 10.6.8 with Quicktime Player 10.0. After entering the text in an annotation and pressed the command+return, I pressed ctrl+space to play the clip again. Once I press ctrl+space, the annotation tiers become "blank" and the ELAN simply got frozen. After a while, the video began to play again and the annotation tiers look blank. When I quit ELAN and open it again, it works just fine. (And of course what I did disappeared because the file has not been saved.) After a while, the same problem occurs again. I am not sure whether it is related to Chinese character inputs (Big 5) but this problem occurs regardless English or Chinese were used in the annotations. Please help.

This is difficult to explain and difficult to reproduce, especially since the problem doesn't occur all the time.
What you could do, is try to open the log after the "freezing". Once the user interface is responsive again, it might be possible to choose View->View Log... and see if there are error messages that could clarify what is going on.
