.mts AVCHD files in ELAN
Hello forum. I would first of all like to express my appreciation of this fantastic software, and of its availability to anyone interested.

But of course I'm writing to the forum with a problem:

My data is all in .mts format (AVCHD). The quality is great, but it's causing lots of problems for me, most importantly in ELAN. I can open the files in the program but they play with lots of skipping and jerking and audio de-synchronization. I have used a trial version of a converter to make a short (1 min.) segment into mp4 (80mb), but this is almost as jerky as the .mts file. I have a dual core 4gb pentium processor and 40gb of free space on my hard drive so I don't think my computer is a problem. I can play the files fine in Windows Media Player.

If anyone has any experience with .mts files and, specifically, how to work with them in ELAN, it would be much appreciated by myself and by the Quechua speaking community I work with!

Thank you whoever takes the time to read this, and moreover respond to it,

Joshua Shapero
Department of Anthropology
University of Michigan

Re: Re: .mts AVCHD files in ELAN
In order to determine whether in ELAN that specific codec (k-lite) is used, you could right click the video and select the option "Show Filter Graph". That should give you a listing of all codecs in use for that particular file. It doesn't solve the problem, but if you know which codec is used you might try to uninstall it for instance.
In the same menu there is also an option to list all installed codecs and you could use this list to find the exact naming of the K-Lite codec. Then you can try to launch ELAN with a parameter for a preferred codec. In ELAN's install directory there is a .bat file, e.g. elan_4-1-2.bat . If you open this in a text editor you could add the option
-DJDSPreferredSplitter="splitter_name", where splitter_name is the exact name of the codec part that does the first handling of the file (splitting audio and video etc.).
Put this option just after the last -D option in the file, e.g.:
-Dswing.aatext=true -DJDSPreferredSplitter="splitter_name" mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN %1
Then launch ELAN with that bat file. No guarantee it will work but it might be worth trying.
We are working on improving the support for .mp4 on Windows, it is still problematic. To be able to use .mov QuickTime needs to be installed before ELAN is installed.
The best options are probably mpeg-1 or mpeg-2, where mpeg-2 has also all kinds of codec related issues.

Re: .mts AVCHD files in ELAN
I finally resolved this issue. Here's how:
I used Adobe Media Encoder to convert the files as mpeg-4 .mov files. I used 720x400 ratio, progressive, and set the quality down to 80%. With these settings, the videos are now working smoothly in ELAN. The benefit of Adobe is that you can convert just the portion of the file that you want, and the conversion is very fast.

Hope this is helpful to anyone else with the same problem.

-Josh
