slow access to symbolically associated tiers

Sluggish in symbolically associated tier opening and saving when file size and RAM appear to have no problems.
Testing Sound and Text alignment for previously transcribed audio materials in Helsinki.
Platform ELAN 4.0 on a Mac OS X 10.6.6
Working eaf file consists of audio and two types of tiers:
five time-aligned ?-Spch tiers
and five symbolically-associated ?-orthography tiers, one for each Spch tier.
The file size is only 319 KB.
The Spch tiers contain complex Unicode marking, and the symbolically associated orthography tiers contain basic Russian Cyrillics.
I select Grid and tick the box so that both the time-aligned and child tier appear parallel.
If you double click empty slot in the symbolically associated orthographic column, you can then write the Cyrillic word forms.
This is what I have been doing ...
For some reason, starting yesterday, I can only quickly open the time-aligned slots.
The symbolically associated slots are sluggish, and take 10 or more seconds to respond -- open and be saved.
Previously, there seemed to be no problem.
I have also written directly in the tiers, using Alt+n.
The Activity monitor indicates over 2 GB of free memory, so that should not be an issue.
I'll try reinstalling ELAN 4.0
Are there any other suggestions?

In order to better understand the problem, I compared my 319 KB eaf file with the others I have for the same project.

This file was by far the largest.
size: 319 KB
time-aligned annotations: 563
symbolically associated child annotations: 420

Coping with sloth:
in ELAN I have now unselected all but View/Viewer/Grid viewer and View/Viewer/Interlinear viewer.

This appears to free up enough memory to allow me to write tier annotations at an adequate rate.

The question then is: How can I increase the operating memory of ELAN 4.0.0.
