hardware requirements: working memory
We need to process extremely large video files in ELAN (5GB or more) and sometimes even 2 files simultaneously. Would it help to buy a PC/Laptop with a high working memory (above 8GB)? If yes, how much would you suggest?
Re: hardware requirements: working memory
Having a PC with huge working memory is always beneficial, of course. But it shouldn't really be necessary for playback of large files. The media playback frameworks used by ELAN (DirectShow, QuickTime) might have different buffering and pre-loading strategies, I believe none of them will try to load complete files (or very large chunks) into working memory.
For fast access to any point in a media file, a high performance hard disc might be equally important (but I don't have any figures on this).
