Is it always necessary to import CHAT-files prior to start coding in ELAN coding?

Is it always necessary to import CHAT-files prior to start coding in ELAN coding?
We have a set of CHAT-transcriptions already made from videodata. (The transcriptions have not been linked to the mediafile (video) in CHAT). Now, we have started doing some analyses using ELAN, but we have discovered that it seems like we have to start with importing the CHAT-transcripts, and then add the mediafiles.
But my question is whether it is possible to import a CHAT-file to a (set of) mediafile(s) that you have already started to analyze in ELAN.
We have tried using "Import > CHAT-file", but then only a new ELAN document opens up.

Well, this is just the way it is currently implemented. Importing into an existing transcription would add some more complexity (handling tier- and type-name conflicts, undo/redo etc.) but would of course in principle be possible.
You can use the File->Merge Transcriptions... function to add the imported tiers to the transcription you already have (creating a third file) but these are of course some intermediate steps that one might want to omit.
