ELAN 3.9.1 crashing

the problem started a few days ago, after restarting the computer the ELAN got into 'endless initializing' mode. I've used the forum to find the solution and followed the steps outlined by other users - so I changed the settings for Quicktime in ELAN options, installed the newest version of Quicktime, installed ELAN 3.9.1. as I had been running the previous version up till then. The file initializes ok but now I'm experiencing more and more frequent ELAN crashes so for example I start working on coding and a few minutes later it crashes (doesn't seem to be any particular action that causes it), when I restart it, it does not seem to remember my previous settings (seems to be losing the last save too although I do autosave every minute) such as the placing or viewing of the tiers. Recently I've also lost the colours on the controlled vocab... Any idea what this is and how I can fix it?

some info regarding the persisting problem - it seems to be the media player causing it - I'm using mp4 file and it seems to crash when I detach the viewer and start playing a selected section. I've left the viewer attached and it's running ok for now - but it would be great to be able to detach it without ELAN crashing :-)
I've uninstalled both ELAN and QuickTime and installed it anew but that did not seem to solve the problem.
