Difficult to explain. An ELAN installation includes a Java Runtime Environment, did you replace that one? Did you try an installed (not copied) ELAN with the original JRE?
Did you try the installed ELAN with a regular mpeg-1 file, any problems in that case? Any information in the ELAN log file (see previous post) after the crash?

As said, I tried copying a working install, full remove of local JRE and ElAN and started fresh, everything I can think of.  I have not tried a different file since the file in question works on a Windows 7 machine, two XP machines, and a Mac without issue (and its the fie we need to work on the machine in question).  Which log file woud you like me to copy, I'd be happy to do so.

The log file as it is after creating the new file and the subsequent crash would be interesting.

The log is in user_home\.elan_data and is named elan0.log (or elan1.log etc. look at the timestamp). At the end of the file there might be a listing of "filters" followed by an error message.
