mlu on elan

Posted by saimetek at 2010-02-03 22:39

Hi,
My name is Saime Tek, and I am a PhD student at the University of Connecticut. We are working on joint attention and language in young children with autism using ELAN. I really need some information on analyzing speech on ELAN; more speciifically, I am wondering if there is a way to calculate mean length of utterance on this software.
Thanks

No, there is no single "calculate mlu" function in ELAN.
You can get some (simple) statistics for the document, like the number of annotations per tier. If you have the utterances on one tier and the morphemes on another then mlu can be calculated. The point is (I guess) that the morphemes cannot be detected/extracted automatically by ELAN. (There is only a tokenizer to extract words from utterances.)

Thanks for your reply. I think I solved the problem though. I had the language coded on one tier, then exported it to CLAN, and analyzed the mlu using the CLAN (well I am pretty familiar with both programs). I love the idea that you can import and export data between ELAN and CLAN!
Best,
Saime
