Well, no software is ever perfect, so I very much thank the Backup feature, although it doesn't really do things for you. I made this for my colleagues here at the Research office, so I might as well post it here if any of you need it:

When ELAN decides to crash

(Just in case, make a copy of your ELAN files before
doing this)
1. Close
ELAN
2. Go to
the folder My Documents\ ELAN save files
3. Of
the file you’re working, you should have more than one file
{ your ELAN file
(.EAF) is named example.eaf }
4. You’ll
find another one called example.eaf.001 (or you’ll see that it is said to be
File type 001)
5. Right
click on this 001 file, open with… , (select programme from a list), Wordpad
6. Select
all the information ( Edit – Select all )
7. Copy
8. Now,
open the file example.eaf with Wordpad as well, select all, delete, and Paste
9. Now
you can open example.eaf from ELAN and all your transcript should be there
