Export Overlap problem

Posted by alecsprodan at 2009-10-09 16:58

Hello.

I’m writing on behalf of the CLA Research Group based at the University of Lleida, Catalonia, SPAIN.

We have a problem related with Exporting the project (Either HTML or on paper)

Apparently, when we export the Project (either Interlineal or Traditional) the overlaps are not very accurately displayed in the document. For example:

---------------------

JMA   la- la càmera és| e··ns assegura que de vegades| a lo millor tu dius una

cosa_| i després ell +ehh···+ la repeteix| i no sabem si- no la d'això

diu\ estic d'acord_ osti| no podem identificar la veu| no/ perquè tampoc

us coneixem tant_| si està d'acord ell o està d'aco···rd no/ i a llavors

nosaltres mirem per pode··r clarificar\

ALB   vale\

And the problem is, the ‘vale’ should go in the middle, like this:

---------------------

JMA   la- la càmera és| e··ns assegura que de vegades| a lo millor tu dius una

cosa_| i després ell +ehh···+ la repeteix| i no sabem si- no la d'això

diu\ estic d'acord_ osti| no podem identificar la veu| no/ perquè tampoc -->

ALB                                          vale\

-->JMA   us coneixem tant_| si està d'acord ell o està d'aco···rd no/ i a llavors

nosaltres mirem per pode··r clarificar\

   - with the arrows, we are indicating there is no pause in JMAs' turn between 'tampoc' and 'us'

  How can we signal in an accurate way the exact point where and overlaps starts and ends in a transcript?

Many thanks,

There's currently no good solution for that in ELAN. The export options mentioned are all "single line" or "interlinear block" oriented. So, not time oriented. It will be quite complicated, trying to capture these alignments in a plain text file.
This is on the to do list, but I can't tell when this will be implemented.

  Thank you, Han

  We really like working with ELAN and we think it's a very very helpful tool. There isn't, then, any other possible way of transforming any Exported ELAN file type into what we want with the help of maybe another software that you know of?

  Thanks again,

There are two tools that I know of that might offer such export and that can import ELAN files: Transformer (http://www.oliverehmer.de/transformer/) and EXMARaLDA (http://www.exmaralda.org/index.html). So, I don't know for sure, but it might be worth trying.
