copy and paste annotation group - only parent tier is being copied

Posted by rsinger at 2009-09-29 02:37

I have imported a multi-speaker text from Toolbox and need to copy and paste annotations from one speaker tier set to another. I have the parent tier rf (usually ref in toolbox) and also the dependent tiers xv, xe and nt. If I click on the annotation in the existing rf tier so it goes blue, then click on the name of the tier I want to move it to so it goes red the rf field will move to the new rf tier - but the dependent tiers do not copy and paste! If they did it would save me a lot of work - does anyone have any tips?

It is possible to succesfully copy and paste a group of annotations (annotation + depending annotations) ONLY if you paste the group on the same tier (i.e. source nad destination tier are the same). E.g. if you want to duplicate a group of annotations somewhere else on the tier.
If you paste on another (set of) tier(s), it is clear to the program where you want to paste the first annotation (because you have selected that tier) but there is no way to tell the program where the other annotations should be pasted: there is no mapping for the other tiers. Therefore only the top annotation is pasted.
Now, in the case of annotations imported from a Toolbox file with multiple speakers, you typically have groups of tiers with the following naming: ref@AA, tx@AA, ref@BB, tx@BB etc. Then it would be possible to deduce where to paste the depending annotations, based on the tiername prefixes. But, this is currently not implemented in ELAN.

If you have to transfer many tiers from one tier to another, you could do a Save As, delete tier you don't want to copy, rename the remaining tiers to match the destination tiers and then use File -> Merge Transcriptions to add the tiers + annotations to the destination file. Be aware of overlaps with existing annotations.
