Languages?
Hi<br><br>Sorry, me again. I'm transcribing a corpus where the speakers sometimes switch into other languages. Is there any way to represent this within ELAN? I know you can change the character set, but is there a way to say have at the top "Default language English" and then for particular annotations within a tier change the language value to something else? <br><br>I could put it into my own coding system, but one of the attractions of ELAN for me is that it actually stores the data in XML, so it would be nice to have this as part of the inbuilt representation rather than overlaid on top using special characters. I've also got up to 17 speakers in each file so I'd rather not represent it by having an extra tier for them all for when/if they switch, which I assume is the most obvious way to achieve this in case I'm missing big flashing "Change language" button.<br><br>Any input appreciated. It's a TESOL corpus in which speakers regularly drop into their first language, which I'd like to be able exclude from later processing.<br><br>Caroline<br>
Re: Languages?
The default language that can be selected when creating or changing a tier is currently merely used for providing a suitable input method (e.g. a virtual keyboard). You can temporarily change the language when editing an annotation. In the edit box that appears after double-clicking an annotation, the available languages are selectable in the right mouse popup menu.
Note that a language switch in an (existing) annotation is not visible/detectable in any way other than by looking at the characters used. In other words, no special sign or character is stored in the file to mark a switch.
There is currently no shortcut to switch between two user defined languages, but this feature is already on the wish list.
