ELAN won't open .mov video files
I am a new ELAN user working with a graduate student to use ELAN for video data analysis. My graduate student downloaded ELAN 3.7.2 and was initially able to open one of the .mov files we are working with on her Vista desktop. However, now when she tries to open a file (using file-->new), ELAN says it's initializing, but the file does not open.

I have no trouble opening the same files on my computer. We are both using new Vista-based machines. (I don't have any more information about hers).

I am at a loss as to how to help her with this. Do you have any ideas?
Re: ELAN won't open .mov video files
It is a bit strange that at first a .mov could be opened and then not anymore. There are 2 possible reasons for that:
- something happened to the system, e.g. an update of QuickTime, and ELAN cannot find certain "libraries"
- there is a difference in encoding of the .mov file, and 1 type can be handled and the other not
One thing to do is to look in the ELAN log file, after opening a .mov file that leads to hanging in the "Initializing" phase. The file is in
<user_home>\.elan_data\elan0.log (or elan1.log, look at the timestamp).
At the end of the file there might be error messages. There should also be a line about the media framework used to play the file. You can post the messages here and/or send them to me han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl.
Also, in the install directory of ELAN there might be a "java_elan.policy" file. If this one exists, open it in a text editor and look at the line:
"grant codeBase "file:C:...."" containing the path to a QTJava.zip file. Please check if this is a valid path, leading to an existing QTJava.zip file.

Re: ELAN won't open .mov video files
I have found the solution to this, for anyone interested. It is a very silly solution, and I don't understand it, but it works perfectly. I just renamed the .mov file with an .mpg extension. Now it works fine.
I'm thinking this has to do with Quicktime update I did right before the problem arose... any ideas?
