problems on mac os 10.5.6

I've been using ELAN on leopard for quite some while now without problems, but lately I have some major ones. ELAN is very slow when opening eaf or etfs and hangs up almost any time I try to annotate. I can make a selection but when I try to annotate the blue beach ball appears. I even had to switch to a PC to keep annotating. So do you have any ideas regarding this? I would be very happy for any suggestions.

Thanks a lot,
Jana

I haven't heard of these particular problems yet. I have received reports on problems in media playback after an update to QuickTime 7.6. I don't know if this is related. Could it be that the problems started after an update of QuickTime (or the OS itself, or of Java)?

Unfortunately, your hints weren't the solution to the problem yet. At least regarding Quicktime and Java. OS updates are things I would rather not get rid off or undue. What is really strange however is that it seems as if ELANs performance is varying. Sometimes it works fine using one file. And then I open or set up another file afterwards and the problems are back. I know of serval Mac 10.5.6. users with the same problems. Could there be yet another solution to the problem?

Thanks a lot,
Jana

Problems that occur occasionally are very difficult to solve. If the problems aren't reproducible, the causes are hard to detect and fix.
I understand that postponing software updates often isn't an option. And it makes no sense at all if it isn't clear that certain problems won't appear when delaying an update.
Might you discover any clues on what triggers the degradation in performance, then please report them here. Right now I wouldn't know how to improve the stability on the Mac.

Some of the problems that I've noticed with people using ELAN on Macs occur when: *Microsoft Word is open (or several programs are open and running simultaneously) *The movie file type is something other than .mov (especially when using multiple videos more than an hour long) [this is currently a problem I am wrestling with - *File names are long *Movies or .eafs are on external hard drives *There is less than 15% memory left on computer HD In addition, running ELAN 3.7.2 has been problematic (long initializing, black video screen, blank scroll view when there should be several text-filled annotations, crashes) so I've been using 3.6 until there's a new update. I've already tried the switch back to java but that didn't seem to solve these issues. These are just trends that I've noticed and they may have nothing to do with the performance of ELAN (or may not be unique to just macs) but I thought it might be worthwhile to note them here so others could respond to this with their own thoughts.
