Simultaneus editing and playing could be improved
Hi! Elan is great. However simultaneous annotation editing and playing (transportation) could be improved.

Consider this scenario: You have made a selection that extends over screen boundary (needs to scroll the viewport). Then you start adding annotation for this selection. Once you're editing the annotation, you decide you would like to listen to it again (while editing). You press shift-space, and ELAN lets you listen to that selection while you edit (which is great!). But when playing cursor crosses viewport boundary (and screen needs to "scroll") annotation editing mode will abort, causing your partially written annotation to vanish.

Could this be made to work, so editing of long passages would be possible this way?

Other thing I find annoying about ELAN is that keyboard shortcuts cannot be (re)defined by oneself. Currently I use software called "Hotkey Master", to make function keys like F1 play/pause, F2 add annotation, F3 clear selection... I simply make a keyboard macro in Hotkey Master. However, it could be great if these keys could be defined within ELAN!

And now while I'm at it, I could also request a keyboard shortcut to center the viewport to current location. So when activated, viewport would scroll so that current location is in the middle (or better yet, in the left side of viewport).

Thanks for that great software!

Arttu

Re: Simultaneus editing and playing could be improved
Thanks for the suggestions. About these points;
- First about losing what has been typed ; there is a user preference (Edit -> Preferences -> Edit Preferences, Editing preferences) "Deselecting the inline text edit box commits the changes" that, when ticked, should prevent you from losing what you already entered at the moment edit mode is aborted (in any other way then with the Escape key).
Which version of ELAN are you using? On the systems that I have tested, the edit box is no longer dismissed when the crosshair crosses the viewport boundary.
- user definable keyboard shortcuts is on the to-do list. This is not really a minor issue, in terms of what is needed to implement it.
- we'll see if we can find and add a shortcut for placing the selection / active annotation in the center or to the left of the viewport
