Problems with Vista?

Posted by annalena at 2008-09-30 14:40

I work with ELAN in a student group, transcribing sign language files. We have a few "strange" problems, with .mov files not being shown on PCs and one guess we have is that it might be connected to Vista. Has anybody had any similar problems?

I don't think this is a problem specific for Vista, but maybe others can share their experiences.
Anyway, to be able to play .mov files in ELAN on any Windows system, Quick Time needs to be installed. And it needs to be installed before ELAN is installed. The installer of ELAN tries to detect where the Quick Time components are and tries to create a "policy" file, which is needed to grant ELAN access to these components.

Ah, this sounds exactly what might be going on, since the students with problems mainly had brand new laptops with Windows. Hopefully this will solve our problem.
Thanks!

Dear Han,

I just bought a brand new DELL notebook, and it comes with Windows Vista. Unfortunately, ELAN is not working at all in this computer! I am able to open the file (.eaf or the video file) and manipulate the video, but only if I make no selections or annotations. As soon as I select some portion of the video, the buttons cease to work properly and I'm no longer able to play the video, play selection, moving forwards or backwards, etc.

The first thing I tried to do was to look for the video advanced configurations, because in the past I successfully solved video problems with ELAN by manipulating the option "video acceleration". But, in this computer, I wasn't able to change this option. The button for "changing configurations" is there, but with opaque colors, indicating that the option is not avaiable, and there is a message saying that "this video driver does not allow changing configurations of hardware acceleration".

I searched this forum looking for problems with Windows Vista, but haven't found anything that looks like this. Actually, I don't know whether this is a problem with video hardware or with the operating system.

If this description is too underspecified for finding a solution, please give some instruction on what information must I gather so that you could have a clearer picture of what's going on.

Thank you!
Tarcisio
