Some annotation problems

Posted by gmasso at 2007-05-02 14:29

It's the first time I work with ELAN. I haven't any problem with existing files (i.e. ECHO corpus), but I can't annotate a new video file (mpg) in Spanish Sign Language: the program gets hung up, the video doesn't goes frame by frame with Ctrl+Right (it doesn't move for a while and suddenly it changes)... I follow the manual step by step but I don't understand why it doesn't work.

I would be gratefull for your help,

Guillem

If the ECHO video files, which, I believe, are regular mpeg-1 files, play without problems but other files don't, it's very likely the problem lies in the encoding of the video file(s). Are these mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 files?
It is also possible that a buggy mpeg-2 codec has been installed, e.g. with the installation of a DVD player?
Some hints about installed codecs can be found in ELAN's log file, in <user_home>\.elan_data\elan0.log (or elan1.log etc). The set of 'filters' in use for the video file can be found there; if the video file is a regular mpeg-1 file and the default 'MPEG-I Stream Splitter'is not in the chain of filters, this might be the cause of the problem.

Thank you, Han,

The video was an mpeg-2 file. I've converted it to mpeg-1 and now there isn't any problem.

I'm sorry, I was wrong: there are some problems.

I annotate the video, I save it (Ctrl+S) and exit. But when I open the .eaf file, the annotation has vanished!

This is probably a completely different problem. Is it reproducable, does the same thing happen after a Save As?
If so, it's time to inspect the ELAN log file after closing ELAN (<user_home>\.elan_data\elan0.log).

I reinstalled ELAN. Now, it seems OK (I hope!).

Thanks,

Guillem
