opening existing document in ELAN 3.0
Dear all,
After installing the new version of ELAN, I've tried to open some existing documents of mine several times (documents which I still can perfectly open with ELAN 2.6.3) but the same problem happens: I've got an ELAN blank page, with no transcriptions/tiers/linguist types/controlled vocabulary at all, and no linked video files either. I tried to add the video files in the menu option "Linked files - Add", but I was only able to get the videos... transcriptions and the file structure still don't appear.
I took a look at the updated manual but saw no changes in this respect, so I'm wondering what am I doing wrong?
Best,
Tarcísio (USP-Brazil)
Re: opening existing document in ELAN 3.0
There can be problems with opening ELAN files if the path contains accented characters (e.g. ç, ã, ü). ELAN 3.0 uses a newer version of a library to 'parse' the .eaf files and this seems to explain the different behavior compared to ELAN 2.6.3.
We'll see if there is anything that we can do to fix this problem in a next release.

Re: opening existing document in ELAN 3.0
Same problem here: no way to open an existing ELAN-Document (under OS 10.4.9, PPC). There are no special characters neither in the path nor in the title. (The .eaf files have been created by EXMARALDA; nevertheless, the other created files open correctly).
Best regards,
afa
Re: Re: opening existing document in ELAN 3.0
The only way to find out what is going on then is to have a look in the log file.
After trying to open such file perform next steps:
open a Terminal window and do:
cd .elan_data
ls -al
locate the most recent elan.log (elan0.log or elan1.log) and then:
cat elan0.log
Copy the output and post it here or mail it to me.

Re: Re: Re: opening existing document in ELAN 3.0
I have the same problem, although my files are Elan 3.0 files. I just switched from a Dell Latitude D600 to a Vaio; I have the most recent version of Java, etc. Here's my log file. I can open transcripts but the program hangs if the audio is opened too. Also, the same problem happens with new annotation files. I can create a file, save it, associate audio with it, etc, but if I close it I can't open it again.
CLaire

Apr 28, 2007 3:39:22 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: ELAN 3.0.0
Apr 28, 2007 3:39:22 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: Java version: 1.5.0_09
Apr 28, 2007 3:39:22 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: Runtime version: 1.5.0_09-b03
Apr 28, 2007 3:39:22 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.util.SystemInstallationSecurity verifyLibExt
INFO: verifying lib/ext C:\PROGRAM FILES\ELAN 3.0\JRE\LIB\EXT
Apr 28, 2007 3:39:22 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.integration.ExternalLauncher start
INFO: External launch thread started...
Using QT Media Player
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: quicktime/QTException
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.player.PlayerFactory.createQTMediaPlayer(PlayerFactory.java:247)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ViewerManager2.createMediaPlayer(ViewerManager2.java:268)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.linkedmedia.MediaDescriptorUtil.createMediaPlayers(MediaDescriptorUtil.java:359)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2.initElan(ElanFrame2.java:596)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2.openEAF(ElanFrame2.java:345)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2.openEAF(ElanFrame2.java:361)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.FrameManager.createFrame(FrameManager.java:572)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.FrameManager$RecentAction.actionPerformed(FrameManager.java:1030)
at javax.swing.AbstractButton.fireActionPerformed(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.AbstractButton$Handler.actionPerformed(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.DefaultButtonModel.fireActionPerformed(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.DefaultButtonModel.setPressed(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.AbstractButton.doClick(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicMenuItemUI.doClick(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicPopupMenuUI$Actions.doReturn(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicPopupMenuUI$Actions.actionPerformed(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.SwingUtilities.notifyAction(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.JComponent.processKeyBinding(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.KeyboardManager.fireBinding(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.KeyboardManager.fireKeyboardAction(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.JComponent.processKeyBindingsForAllComponents(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.JComponent.processKeyBindings(Unknown Source)
at javax.swing.JComponent.processKeyEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Component.processEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Container.processEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Component.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Container.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Component.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.KeyboardFocusManager.redispatchEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.DefaultKeyboardFocusManager.dispatchKeyEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.DefaultKeyboardFocusManager.preDispatchKeyEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.DefaultKeyboardFocusManager.typeAheadAssertions(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.DefaultKeyboardFocusManager.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Component.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Container.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Window.dispatchEventImpl(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.Component.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpOneEventForHierarchy(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForHierarchy(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.run(Unknown Source)
Apr 28, 2007 3:40:14 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.integration.ExternalLauncher stop
INFO: External launch thread stopped...
Apr 28, 2007 3:40:14 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.integration.ExternalLauncher$LaunchThread run
INFO: Launch thread interrupted...
