eaf-file manipulation tool

Posted by tploetz at 2011-11-22 21:32

Hi,

I am fiddling around (manually, i.e., outside Elan) a lot with EAF files. This is mainly reasoned by the fact, that we have tools that generate annotations, which need to be fed into existing Elan files (with potentially already existing tiers and annotations). Furthermore, our annotation templates still "evolves", i.e., we are constantly updating it.

We have a number of Elan files based on some template we have built in the past. These files already contain annotation, which we obviously do not want to loose when changing the template. By changing the template I mean all sort of changes like additional tiers, removed tiers, changed tiers, changed controlled vocabularies, you name it. Especially the latter was a complicated case since we basically had to map all existing annotations to some new name, merge some of them etc. I know, that is a sign of bad planning but that's the situation.

I was wondering if there is interest in the community to build some eaf-manipulation tool (sth. like the pdf-tools, where you can do all sorts of dirty and not so dirty tricks and manipulations with pdf-files). We would definitely be up for this. I even wrote a tool for merging multiple eaf-files when I was kind of desperate ... (see accompanying post).

Is there a will and interest in the community for such a thing?
Is anyone already working on such a swiss-army knife for eaf-files?

Cheers
Thomas

Referring to my comments to your previous post: if anyone has such a tool we would be happy to make it available via our "third party resources" page.

We have some plans to create a library or API for manipulation of EAF files but its functionality will probably be less extensive than you describe. Also, it is difficult to sketch a time frame for such API.
