Elan on Mac OS Lion?
Hi, it looks like Lion is not allowing any PowerPC applications, so for instance one can't install the latest ELAN Mac version. Any plans to release a compatible version soon? I'm still able to use 4.0 with Lion, but it's been freezing every time I try to tokenize a tier, which seems like it might be a compatibility issue (?). Thanks for all your help and hard work.

ELAN for Mac is not a PowerPC application, so that shouldn't be the problem. What is the problem I can't tell: I don't have access to a Lion based Mac yet. As soon as I have I'll try to reproduce the problem.
In the meantime you might want to post error messages from the log file, if any (View->View Log...)?

Thanks, Han. If there's a log file, I'm not sure to find it. After I download and unzip the disk image, the ELAN icon appears with another icon over it, showing that the program can't be installed. When I click on it, I get the following message: "You can't open the application because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."

The version that cannot be run, is that the Installer version or the "unpack-and-run" version? Or did you try both? If not, can you try the other one as well?
Apologies for the log file confusion, I forgot that in ELAN 4.0 the log is not accessible through the menu. The file can be found in <user_home>/Library/Preferences/ELAN/elan0.log (or elan1.log etc.). Maybe there is some information revealing why the tokenizer function freezes the application.

It sounds to me like they are not using the unpack-and-run version. This problem has been around for a couple of years for OS X users who have not installed the Rosetta emulator that runs PPC code. Now that PPC emulation is no longer included in Lion, users who have upgraded will only be able to use unpack-and-run version, unless the development team upgrades the software they have been using to bundle up the application for installation on a Mac.

Yes, first tests at our institute confirm that
1) the installer doesn't run on Lion
2) the unpack-and-run version of ELAN does run on Lion
The installer version will be updated in the future or completely removed (since it doesn't do much more than unpacking anyway).

Just a note, I've been running ELAN under Mac OS X Lion for a few days now and it seems to be working perfectly fine with one exception:
Any changes to the GUI preferences are not being saved to the .pfsx preferences file. For instance, readjustments to the location of the divider between the wave-form and the annotations below, or changes to the choice of frame Grid/Text/Subtitles/Metadata/etc. being displayed is lost, the zoom level for the wave form, etc.
Any ideas about what the problem could be?
