Exporting to a Readable document
Hello!
I haven't been using ELAN for long, so I apologize in advance for the basic question. How do you export a file in Elan to say, Word, or any other application, and get a readable document? I can export from Elan to different text editors but the text appears in random order and there is no distinction from my speaker 1 and speaker 2.
So my question is the following: can you export directly from Elan to a text editor and produce a readable document? or do you have to manually separate speakers in the text editors and re-arrange jumbled segments of the conversation manually (some segments appear in random order when exported to toolbox).
Thank you so much for your help!
Re: Exporting to a Readable document
You'll have to do some post-processing but exporting as "traditional transcript text" or "interlinear text" will probably be closest to a readable document. It will distinguish different speakers (assuming they are on different tiers) and the segments will be in chronological order.

Re: Exporting to a Readable document
Hi, please explain the Toolbox problem in more detail.
I personally think Childes Chat is an editor friendly format, readable for both humans and computers. You can also export to CSV, which is useful for processing in Excel or Calc. Columns will include timestamps (several styles available) and annotations (one column per selected tier).
As Han already mentioned, interlinear text is also a classic export format. Another option might be printing to a file (PDF or postscript) and then using that either directly or using cut and paste e.g. in Acrobat reader, based on the idea that printing is relatively flexible regarding the layout.
