Segmentation Key: Enter - not working correctly

Posted by cweedall at 2011-07-16 23:41

Hello,

I recently installed ELAN on a PC (only one year old) with Windows 7. No changes were made to any preferences. After beginning a New ELAN project, I added a .mov file and a .wav file. The files load without issues, and I am able to make annotations without any problem. However, when switching to the Segmentation Mode, I encountered a problem which I am unable to resolve.

The default options for Segmentation Mode were used. And "Segmentation Key: Enter" is specified (but unchangeable) in those options. To repeat - the preferences and shortcuts are DEFAULT, and I have not changed them.

When playing the video/audio, by clicking the "play/pause" arrow, I press the ENTER key, so that a new annotation will be created on a tier. The problem is that when I press the ENTER key, it plays or pauses the video/audio. It does NOT create a new annotation. Other users near me seem to not have this problem with a PC and either Windows 7 or Windows XP. Therefore, I am not clear on what could possibly be the problem.

I did uninstall ELAN and reinstalled it, thinking that perhaps the installation was corrupted somehow. However, there was no change in behavior.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on what I could do or fix to resolve this problem, I would be very appreciative.

Thank you,
Chris

I can't reproduce the problem on my Windows 7 PC and I can't find any system setting that might influence the Enter key behavior. Does the enter key always start/stop, even if the start/stop button wasn't the last one that has been pressed? Or does it e.g. play the selection if the Play Selection button was the last one pressed? I ask because on most systems the space bar works like that (repeating the last action) and I was wondering if in your case the Enter key might have that effect.

I have no real solution, but there is a possible workaround. You can create a Controlled Vocabulary with one entry and specify a shortcut key for it in the More Options window.
Then associate the linguistic type of the tier(s) you wish to use in Segmentation mode with that Controlled Vocabulary. If the tier was already selected in Segmentation mode be sure to change the active tier to another tier and back again (reloads the CV keyboard shortcuts). Now you should be able to use the key you specified for segmenting. You'll have the value of CV entry in your annotations but you can remove them later in one action.

If you want to use many tiers in the Segmentation mode this is probably not a suitable workaround.

I've got this problem too, using Windows Vista and ELAN 4.1.2.

On my system, pressing Return or Enter activates the last button that was pressed, exactly the way the spacebar does.

Any new ideas how to fix this?

I think I've found a workaround:
  • Click on the timeline bar between the media control buttons and the tiers.
  • Use the shortcut CTRL+Space to play and pause the media.
  • Pressing Enter should now work correctly for segmentation.
Chris, does that work for you too?

To be honest, I had not had the time to work with ELAN over the last couple months. Just returning to it now, I was trying to run an old project and the sound would not play for some reason anymore. After uninstalling QuickTime and ELAN 4.1.2, and reinstalling those, as well as the newest version of a package of video codecs, things seem to be working correctly. No idea what the problem was, and not sure if your workaround would be successful in my previous situation. I guess I am just glad that it works now!
