session with incomplete media data

Posted by aoksanen at 2011-05-31 10:17

I had to delete some annotations from my audio-text-file in Elan and divide it that way to smaller pieces. Otherwise elan wasn't able to  to tokenize all tiers.

Now then it is not possible to open the new smaller files otherwise than to choose opening session with an incomplete media data. The problem here is that you cannot hear the sound with these files.

The problem seems to vanish, when you make changes to your work and save it to the same computer you are working with. But at least then when you try to move the file with mass storage device to another computer it won't open normally, not with sound.

Maybe there are other ways to make elan tokenize all tiers within big files too than to delete annotations and divide the file?

There seem to be two issues here:

- when opening a file on another computer the media file(s) sometimes can not be found. You have then the option to open the file without the media (no sound) or you can tell ELAN where the media file is. This last action can also be done at a later point in time via Edit->Linked Files...

- tokenizing of a tier in a big file. I'm not familiar with this problem. Could it be that ELAN runs out of memory in this operation? Or maybe an error occurs?
You can try by giving ELAN more memory: in the ELAN install folder is a file ELAN.lax. If you open this in a text editor and find the line starting with:

lax.nl.java.option.java.heap.size.max=

you could double the number after the "=" sign.

Maybe there are messages in the log file (in ELAN 4.1 via View->View Log.. or in <user_home\.elan_data\elan0.log>)?
