maximum file size?

Posted by Macci at 2011-03-11 20:45

Hello,

is there a maximum size for video files that can be played in ELAN? I have a 4 GB Video file (.mts) and it seems that it's simply too big to be played in ELAN. Or is no possible for me to play the video because it's a mts-file?

thanks for any answer!
Macci

No, there is no maximum file size predefined by ELAN. It depends on the actual player in use (Windows Media Player, QuickTime etc) whether the file size is an issue.
It seems more likely that the file format is the issue in this case; I don't know if .mts files are supported by default, but I guess special codecs need to be installed.

Thank you, Han, for your answer. I have one further question, since I'm really not a computer expert: Would you now recommend to convert my mts-files into any file that my wmp is able to play, or should I rather download a decoder as a "support" for my wmp? I already downloaded ffdshow but that doesn't seem to work with wmp and ELAN either.. If it's then better to convert my mts-videos into other files, which converter do you recommend?
Thank you,
Macci

Although it is probably most convenient to try to get the .mts to work in ELAN by installing a codec, from a point of view of archiving and sharing your data (what you might want to do at some point) it is better to convert the files to more standard formats (like mpeg-1 and mpeg-2).
Unfortunately I cannot recommend any particular software for the conversion, maybe other users can share their experiences?

Best,
Han
