unexplicable problem with ELAN 3.9 for Windows
Dear Andrea,
I am desperate...remember the nones transcription I had to do with prof.Genetti?
It's the second time that I start over working on my project , reach like 5 minutes of transcribed and translated conversation and something with the saving on the flash drive breaks. When after the first time it crashed I started over with the transcription, I kept on emailing my work to my self, saving it on the desktop of my laptop an on the flash drive.(thinking it was a flash drive problem) and it worked..at least the one saved on the desktop....so i kept on working on it as much as I could.
Today I tried to open the file to work on it and again same thing as a week ago...the file opens but no transcription is in it !!!!the lines are empty!
I tried to open the emailed one and it says that "the file is not a correct file".I tried to open recent files from the Elan menu...nothing!
First thing i thoughgt was that at that point it must have been something I did when I saved but I always saved the file as a .eaf and replaced with the old one in the same folder!I also had backup ones .pfsx but they don't open either!
Any idea what could this all be?

Sorry I copied and paste an email I sent to a friend and forgot to take out the beginning
Re: unexplicable problem with ELAN 3.9 for Windows
Difficult to explain and/or reproduce all the problems described, but here are some general hints and suggestions:
- .pfsx files are preferences files used by ELAN to store some user settings and preferences. These files can not be opened as if they were annotation files.
- if automatic backup is used, files will be generated with an extension of the form .eaf.001. After removing the .001 (or .002 etc) part these files can be opened like any other eaf file.
- if there are no tiers after opening a file, they might just be hidden in the main view (as a result of a bug or hidden accidentally). It is always good to check in e.g. the Grid view if the tiers are really gone.
I'm not aware of problems in general with saving on a flash drive or on any other type of drive. Only when for one or more tiers the "Default Language" has been set to None, there is a problem as reported here
(http://www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/elanforum/simpleforumpost.2010-07-29.8196847341).
This will be fixed in the next version of ELAN.
