Elan hangs intializing on new computer
I have just transferred my files to a new PC running Windows 7. Elan cannot open my EAF files. It hangs while initializing.

I shut it down as it seemed to be stuck and stayed initializing for a long time a day or so ago.

Here is one log:

Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: ELAN 3.9.0
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: Java version: 1.5.0_11
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: Runtime version: 1.5.0_11-b03
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: OS name: Windows Vista
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: OS version: 6.1
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: User language: en
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: User home: C:\Users\Kelley
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: User dir: C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:58 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ELAN main
INFO: Classpath: C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\elan.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\mfsearch__V1.1.0.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\jmf2.1.1a\jmf.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\jmf2.1.1a\sound.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\batik__V1.1.1.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\Do Not Install\copyandrename_v3.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\jhall-2.0.0.5.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\xalan-2.4.1.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\macapp__V03.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\xerces\2.9.0\xercesImpl-2.9.0.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\jlfgr-1_1.jar;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\help.zip;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lib\cocoa_qt\1.4\JavaCocoaQTMovieView.jar;\\QTJava.zip;C:\windows\SysWOW64\QTJava.zip;C:\Program Files (x86)\ELAN 3.9.0\lax.jar;
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:59 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.util.SystemInstallationSecurity verifyLibExt
INFO: verifying lib/ext C:\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\ELAN 3.9.0\JRE\LIB\EXT
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:59 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.integration.ExternalLauncher start
INFO: External launch thread started...
Jun 23, 2010 10:55:59 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.prefs.PreferencesReader parse
WARNING: Preferences file does not exist: C:\Users\Kelley\.elan_data\shortcuts.pfsx
Using QT Media Player
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: quicktime/QTException
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.player.PlayerFactory.createQTMediaPlayer(PlayerFactory.java:261)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ViewerManager2.createMediaPlayer(ViewerManager2.java:275)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.linkedmedia.MediaDescriptorUtil.createMediaPlayers(MediaDescriptorUtil.java:423)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2.initElan(ElanFrame2.java:704)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2.openEAF(ElanFrame2.java:382)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2.openEAF(ElanFrame2.java:398)
at mpi.eudico.client.annotator.ElanFrame2$1.run(ElanFrame2.java:251)
at java.awt.event.InvocationEvent.dispatch(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventQueue.dispatchEvent(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpOneEventForHierarchy(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEventsForHierarchy(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.pumpEvents(Unknown Source)
at java.awt.EventDispatchThread.run(Unknown Source)
Jun 23, 2010 10:59:48 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.integration.ExternalLauncher stop
INFO: External launch thread stopped...
Jun 23, 2010 10:59:48 PM mpi.eudico.client.annotator.integration.ExternalLauncher$LaunchThread run
INFO: Launch thread interrupted...

Re: Elan hangs intializing on new computer
The log shows that the program hangs when trying to create a QuickTime based player. Are you indeed using QuickTime movie files, .mov or .qt? Was QuickTime installed before ELAN and what's the contents of
the "java_elan.policy" file in the root of the ELAN install folder?

Re: Elan hangs intializing on new computer
Thank you for getting back with me. I installed Elan before Quicktime. I do not find the file you reference but did find this warning in the ELAN install log:

Get Registry Entry: Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime
Value Name: QTSysDir
Status: WARNING
Additional Notes: WARNING - Win32Exception

I will reinstall ELAN to see if that will help. I have had the problem in the past and this has worked.
