Ah, I didn't realize this is on Linux. Currently there is only one media framework available in ELAN on Linux, JMF. Adding a bridge to VLC is on the wish list.
The ELAN distribution contains a JMF version extended with Fobs4JMF. JMF itself (without extensions) supports at least mpeg-1.
If media playback in ELAN on Linux doesn't work, often the cause is that native (non Java) libraries cannot be found. JMF needs the environment variable "LD_LIBRARY_PATH" to bet set; the installer of ELAN tries to do so.
To check if this is indeed the case, try to play a file in ELAN until it hangs, quit ELAN and look in the log file. This file is in <user_home>/.elan_data/elan0.log (or elan1.log etc., look at the timestamp). There might be error messages at the end of the file.

Thanks Han,<br>&nbsp; there seem to be two problems - both mine.&nbsp; First, being new to the whole video thing, my data has been saved in a video format/ audio format / container combination that is not supported by VLC and I need to convert that some how to mpeg 1<br><br>Second, although i can run the JMF test programs (jmstudio in particular) there seems to be something funny about how this machine is set up - the diagnotsics applet wouldn't find the CLASSPATH nor the LD_LIBRARY_PATH until I copied the jars into the java ext directory and the "*.so" files into /usr/lib&nbsp; This is a JMF problem of course.<br><br>With things set up this way, I can load a mpg test file and get Elan to produce a proper warning message that something is missing.&nbsp; Again, an error code that could be googled for would be more helpful that saying that something (that doesn't make sense to me) is missing.<br><br>I will struggle on...<br><br>P<br><br><br>
