No, not solved but getting there. A timer would be a good idea with a message about what was tried and possible fixes. At worst an error code with a unique number so one could google it; certainly more than a message saying that it didn't work :-)<br><br>I had a go at the edititing the preferences but I am on a linux box and there isn't an option for that. Tried the windows option to no avail. That menu is quite deep for something that a complete newbie needs to use.<br><br>Also, while I'm here, vlc seems very popular and seems to work on anything - does that count as a "media framework"?<br><br>Finally, I'd like to use mpeg 1 or 2, but the JMF site refers to a"MPEG enabled capture source" - is that a camera (QuickCam Pro 9000) or the driver UVC - I bet it is neither :-/<br><br>peter<br><br><br>

Ah, I didn't realize this is on Linux. Currently there is only one media framework available in ELAN on Linux, JMF. Adding a bridge to VLC is on the wish list.
The ELAN distribution contains a JMF version extended with Fobs4JMF. JMF itself (without extensions) supports at least mpeg-1.
If media playback in ELAN on Linux doesn't work, often the cause is that native (non Java) libraries cannot be found. JMF needs the environment variable "LD_LIBRARY_PATH" to bet set; the installer of ELAN tries to do so.
To check if this is indeed the case, try to play a file in ELAN until it hangs, quit ELAN and look in the log file. This file is in <user_home>/.elan_data/elan0.log (or elan1.log etc., look at the timestamp). There might be error messages at the end of the file.
