These are codecs (filters) in use when you play the file in ELAN:

Filters in the filter chain:
index: 0 name: Video Renderer
pin: 0 name: VMR Input0
index: 1 name: Default DirectSound Device
pin: 0 name: Audio Input pin (rendered)
index: 2 name: Sonic Cinemaster® VideoDecoder 4.1
pin: 0 name: Video in
pin: 1 name: Subpicture in
pin: 2 name: Video Out
pin: 3 name: ~SPU Out
pin: 4 name: ~CC Out
index: 3 name: Sonic Cinemaster® Audio Decoder 4.2
pin: 0 name: Audio in
pin: 1 name: Audio Out
index: 4 name: Sonic HD Demuxer
pin: 0 name: Input
pin: 1 name: Audio Out
pin: 2 name: Video Out
index: 5 name: //neptune.fpg.unc.edu/CNDP/Video Project/Pragmatics/1P1A1JEL4441/1P1A1JEL4441.ADOS#2.MPG
pin: 0 name: Output

I don't know the Sonic HD Demuxer, but that could be the cause of the problem. Maybe you can compare with Windows Media Player? If you open the same file in WMP and open the Properties window (File -> Properties), the File tab will list the audio and the video codecs used by WMP for that file. If these are not the same as in ELAN, that could explain the differing behaviour.
