Random impossibility to create annotations?

Random impossibility to create annotations?
Hello,

I've created a Parent Tier and then a Child Tier, chosing the 'Included in' criterion. I managed to create annotations on that child Tier and then I couldn't anymore while there was an annotation on the Parent Tier. It appears that it works on some parts of the Child Tier and not on others. I always checked whether the Parent tier was annotated.

Do you have any idea where that problem comes from ?

Thank you.
Re: Random impossibility to create annotations?
No idea. As you already mentioned, if there is an annotation on the parent tier, it should be possible to create annotations on the child tier, within the timespan of the parent annotation. If this fails randomly (so not consistently and reproducable), it is very difficult to find an explanation. Maybe there are messages in the log file after a failure to create an annotation?
The log is in <user_home>\.elan_data\elan0.log and can be opened in a text editor after quitting ELAN.

Re: Re: Random impossibility to create annotations?
Hi, thank you for your answer. Actually, there is no error message, it is simply impossible to add annotations on specific parts of the Tier. I cannot select a portion of the Tier either while there are annotations on the parent Tier on that same portion. I create a Template and tried with different data, thinking the file was corrupt. But now it's not working at all. I cannot select any portion of the Tier. NB: This Tier has an "included in" linguistic type. I thought maybe that was part of the problem, but this is the linguistic type I need to use. What should I do ? Do you have any idea ? Thanks.
Re: Re: Re: Random impossibility to create annotations?
Maybe you can send me the file with a short description of where on which tier you want to create an annotation (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl)? Then I can do some "debug" testing. I have no other ideas / alternatives.

Thank you, I'm sending you that.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Random impossibility to create annotations?
Inspection of the example file learned that annotations on the "Included In" tier could not be created because the target parent annotations where not fully time-aligned. The parent tier is a "Time Subdivision" tier, which allows sequences of annotations not to be fully time-aligned (displayed with short vertical lines in the timeline view). The annotations on the parent tier should first be time-aligned, then child annotations on the "Included In" tier can be added.
This is all not well documented. Error messages will be added in a future release to inform the user why an annotation cannot be created.
