starting timeline on different time

Posted by jgerwing at 2009-12-03 21:17

I am using ELAN to analyze some telephone calls. During the telephone calls (with telephone operators), the operators were typing up a log of (or their notes about) the call. I have a file of what they typed into the log, and their notations are marked with the actual time they made them during the call.

I would like to know whether it is possible to change the timeline of the ELAN annotation file so that it starts on the same time as the log the operators were creating (i.e., a time other than zero). For example, I would like the timeline to start at 3:03 (just for a random example). Basically, I'd like to be able to analyze what was happening in the call in reference to the logs, and changing the timeline would make this a whole lot easier.

I wasn't sure what terms to use to search for this information in the forum and manual, if anyone has any hints of where to look or any solutions, I'd be very grateful.

Jennifer
I believe there are two possible solutions:
- changing the begin time of the media file (probably an audio file) through Options->Media synchronisation mode. This lets you set an offset into the media file.
- it is also possible to shift all annotations of one or all tiers. So, if the logs have been imported into a tiers, all annotations of that tier could be shifted such that they are aligned again with the media. E.g. via Annotation->Shift->Annotations on active tier.

I would prefer the second option.

Hope this helps,

-Han
