annotation not matching tiers

Posted by slippy at 2009-11-12 16:27

I coded a video using ELAN yesterday, and when I saved it the annotation matched the tiers on the left. When I opened it today, it wasn't matching. One of the tiers had disappeared and the annotation from that tier moved down into a different tier. Also, when dragging the cursor over the annotation, the annotation reduplicated itself into the tier below, bumping the annotation below it. I am at a loss on how to fix it. I'm sorry if this post is confusing, I can try to be more clear if it is too confusing. Thanks for your help. Also, I know no one else touched the video because of the time stamp when I opened it this morning.

This is indeed quite confusing. So the problems are:
- a tier has disappeared (is it really gone or just hidden? You can check this via the right mouse button context menu in the area of the tier labels, under visible tiers.)
- annotations appear on the wrong tier (created on tier A, after re-opening appearing on tier B? I don't recognize that, this shouldn't happen of course).
- you can duplicate an annotation by dragging it to another tier. This sounds like a useful feature, but it isn't implemented actually. So, this shouldn't happen either.

I have no clue. Can you reproduce this behaviour? And do these things happen as well if you have no video linked (e.g. by renaming the video and then opening the ELAN file without the media)?

Hi Han,

Thank you for getting back to me. The tier is there, but the tier name has disappeared, and the writing remains in the line. It is not hidden. And, yes, the annotations are still not in their original location. I'm very unsure why the reduplication is happening. Now, it reduplicates three tiers down. I opened the file without the video, and the same behavior happened. Do you have any other suggestions. Opening up the file from the day prior (we save all our files as "save as" to keep records) the annotations and tiers are fine. I am able to work from that file, but I would really like to figure out what happened, so I don't need to do that work all over again. Is there a way to copy annotations from file to file?

Thanks again,
Suzanne

Han,

Here is my email address: slippy@bu.edu If you'd like, email me and I can take screen shots of the problem and send them to you.

Thanks again,

Sorry to write again. I merged the two existing files together, and it sort of solved the problem. But, I am still curious as to why those things happened.

Thanks again,
Suzanne
