Which Compression for Avi-Clip?

Hello,
I am using ELAN to work with some material which I extracted from a DVD (about 30 minutes). In order to do that I am using MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD Data into an AVI File. The programm offers a lot of different compression possibilities, I tried several but the resulting file was either huge (30GB) or ELAN did not really like it (when I moved inside the clip to define a new annotation, the clip itself only reacted with delay, making it hard to place the annotation exactly. Does anybody know, which compression is best? Would be a great help!
