Starting Problems
Hi! I searched the board but couldn't find any solution for my problem. I recently started to work with ELAN in my phd research. I am using a windows XP prof. 2002 system on a new Dell Notebook and ELAN 3.8.0. The first file I wanted to use was an .wmv file. Several features of Elan did not work as I expected them to work. When I am moving the crosshair with the mouse, the picture in the Video Viewer is not changing. It also does not follow, when I am using the button controls. It just goes on if I am playing the video. It is also not possible to adjust the video speed. Changing it has no effect on the actual display of it.
A colleague suggested that I convert the video. I tried that and converted it to .mpeg and also into .qt
Now there is new problem. Elan cannot open these files at all. It is just Initializing without an end.
I am guessing that I might need to install some codecs, but I am working with a University Computer without administrator rights. If this is the problem, it would be good to know which codecs I need, because it allways takes a couple of days to get something new installed on the computer (it is a pain...) and I am loosing so much research time.
Thank you for any help!

Re: Starting Problems
If the mpeg file is an mpeg2 file you need indeed to install an mpeg2 codec (e.g Elecard's mpeg2 plugin). If it is mpeg1 you shouldn't need to install additional software. Qt files can only be played if QuickTime is installed (and if it has been installed before ELAN is installed).
I would expect .wmv files to play without problems in ELAN, but apparently it doesn't always. Maybe there are helpful messages in the log file (<user_home>\.elan_data\elan0.log) after playing .wmv and exiting ELAN?

Re: Re: Starting Problems
I was able to solve the problem by converting the file into avi. Thank you for your answer!
