Slow performance at end of file

Posted by juliehochgesang at 2009-06-10 23:51

Hello,

In a single .eaf for two videos (both under 2 minutes), the program slows down when reaching the end of the file (i.e., the last scrollview). Slow performance means: the scrollview goes blank for a bit; it takes time to enter text in a blank annotation field; when trying to jump back and forth in the transcript when the end of the transcript is the starting point, the program crashes OR nothing happens for a few seconds; the movies go black for a few seconds.

I've tried recompressing the video clips (the original clips with SorensonVideo3 and the recompressed version with H264). I've tried it on different computers (all macs 10.5.6 or 10.5.7 using QT version 7.6.2). And I've tried it with both ELAN 3.7.2 and 3.6.0. All software has been recently updated on all machines.

Any ideas?

Yeah, I've had the same problem. My slowness means the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom of the tier section becomes choppy and delayed, adding or modifying annotations produces a spinning wheel for a short time before being able to edit the annotation and before any addition/modification being accepted, and playback is choppy.

As a workaround, I've found that if I hide the endpoint of the video (i.e., its last frame) off the right side of the screen this doesn't occur. Fortunately in most cases, the last few frames of a video file don't contain data that I care about, so this has tended to be an alright solution, but I do concur that this bug has been around for at least the last two versions, no matter what encoding of video file I use.

This is a very nasty and Mac-only problem that has kept me busy for, I don't know, days, and last week I found the solution. In some viewers the part beyond the end of the media duration is painted with a slightly different color. ELAN uses a system defined "default" color for this purpose and on the Mac this causes the unbelievable decrease in painting performance. I still don't understand why, but it will be changed in the next release.
There is nothing a user can do about it, other than avoiding (as much as possible) the end-of-media part become visible in the timeline and waveform viewer.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that the bug took a considerable amount of your time. Thank you for addressing this issue. As always, we appreciate what you do.
