Configuring Time Series Data

Posted by sbattersby at 2009-06-08 17:42

HI all,

I'm having a bit of trouble configuring some Time Series Data. I have created some files using time/value pairs, and added these using the Linked Files pane. On the track view I've then added these tracks so that I get (3 as it happens) green lines. I'd like to configure these now, but when I right click and go to Configure Tracks I get a message saying "There haven't been any configurable time series sources defined". What have I done wrong here?

Also, is there a way to provide richer information to ELAN about the time series data (e.g. a name for each one?). At the moment the text file that I produce holds only the time and values. The data is the head angle of each person (with three in a scene) from motion capture data. I produce three text files from a little Java tool that I made and then import these files.

Many Thanks

Regards
Stuart

For the basic type of time series files, consisting of time - value pairs, there are no configuration options provided.
You could either implement your own, configurable, provider for your files (see http://www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/src-release-notes.html, release 2.6), or create csv or tab delimited text files that will be handled by the configurable "CSV Service Provider". Although I'm not quite sure, using .csv as file extension might already suffice. Maybe you have to include more than 2 columns in your data file. (Finally there is a launch option to tell the application which service provider you want to use).
Anyway, if all is well you should be able to configure like shown in the manual: http://www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/manual/ch04s03s10.html.

Hi Han,

Thanks for your reply. It seems that the best idea for me is to create a csv. I've made a dummy one to test with, of the following form:

0.000,-55.59598788117711,-55.59598788117711
0.017,-55.44494773701649,-55.44494773701649
0.033,-55.30304148000563,-55.30304148000563
0.050,-55.19497512295081,-55.19497512295081
0.067,-55.12504517821907,-55.12504517821907
0.083,-54.99444784403221,-54.99444784403221
0.100,-54.80058602457571,-54.80058602457571
0.117,-54.48059551142862,-54.48059551142862

I've then added this as a Secondary Linked File, removing all the other Secondary Linked Files. The dialog says that the mime type is unknown and there are no associations (although I've tried associating it with one of the videos).

With this technique I can get to the Configure Tracks panel, which has the correct file path at the top of the dialogue, but it does not show any sample data and there appear to be no tracks that I can add to the viewer either! Is there a way that I should specify that this should be handled by the CSV Service Provider? The file extension is .csv.

Thanks

Regards
Stuart

Hi Stuart,

I don't understand the message about the mime type in the timeseries context.
Anyway, there might be useful information in the log file after adding the csv file as a secondary linked file. Maybe best start with a new, fresh transcription file, add the csv as a secondary linked file, try to configure a track and then exit ELAN. The log file (in <user home>\.elan_data\elan(x).log) might contain more information. You can post the part after the media / media player info here.
You could also send the csv file that you created to me so that I can test in debug mode (han.sloetjes AT mpi.nl)
