ELAN dies when I try to attach the video windows
I am using ELAN 3.7.2 on a MAC 10.4 qith QuicKTime

This is one of the known QuickTime related problems.
On the Mac there are currently 2 QuickTime based media player variants: Cocoa-QT (default) and QuickTime for Java.
If you haven't changed anything in the ELAN configuration (as described here: http://www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/elanforum/simpleforumpost.2009-04-07.5053039867), you'll have a Cocoa-QT based player. This new player works well on some systems but causes crashes on others. We are still working on this player.
The QT for Java player is known to cause crashes when attaching/detaching.
As a last resort there still is an option in the "empty" ELAN window, Options->Use detached media window, that allows to work with permanently detached media players.

Your suggestion works well.
I set the attach/detach behavior before opening any file;
and I do not change it anymore.
