scrolling in 3.7.2 on Mac 10.5.6?

Posted by ek at 2009-04-10 23:19

I just downloaded the latest version of Elan and would like to annotate videos with a matching audio track. When I am making annotations I run into the problem that the window won't scroll to the right anymore even though there is more of the waveform to come. I try dragging the bottom slider to go to the right but it shows very erratic behavior and doesn't actually move forward any more. Have you seen this behavior before and how can it be fixed?

This looks like a problem that I noticed recently on my own 10.5.6 MacBook. It happens that CPU usage jumps to almost 100% when just trying to scroll, clicking the "next scrollview" button a few times or dragging the separator between the waveform and the timeline view.
In my experience, it is not related to the media player in use (the new Cocoa/QT vs the traditional QuickTime for Java player, which was my first candidate as the cause) nor to the ELAN version in use: I notice the same problem in older versions of ELAN that I still have around. (If you still have older versions on your system, you might check if you can confirm this.)
This makes it a very nasty problem; it doesn't seem to be caused by any new code that has been added to ELAN (older versions are effected as well, on Windows I don't see the same problem) but it rather seems the result of a recent update of the OS or Java. This is just speculation.
I'm still trying to find out what is actually happening and what can be done about it.
