Synchronization not working

Posted by cgoodman at 2009-04-07 23:37

Hello, I am using ELAN 3.7.0. All of the sudden Synchronization Mode has completely stopped working. I follow the directions laid out in the manual, trying both relative and absolute offsets, but when I press 'apply current offsets' nothing happens. I have tried this with various files and nothing has worked. Is this a but in the new version or am I missing something?

I don't think anything changed in the Synchronisation Mode lately.

But if you are using the Mac OS version of ELAN: it appears that there is a bug in the way the new Cocoa/QT-player environment deals with the offsets of multiple media players. Only the offset of the first player is taken into account.
This will be fixed in the next release. For the time being, you'll have to switch to the "old" QuickTime for Java player, as described here:

We have already applied this QT change, but it did not solve the synching problem. This problem did not occur until we downloaded the new version, now even our older files are no longer synched. Is it possible to get a copy of the older version that we can use? Are the different versions backwards compatible? If we have the older version still on our machine, is it safe to delete the updated version or will this mess things up even more? If we can get the older version, should we first delete the new version then download the old one? Will this cause us to loose any data?

That is remarkable, if I switch to the QuickTime for Java player, synchronization works as expected. Again, I don't think anything changed in that area lately. You can check which framework is used by right-clicking the video and selecting "Player Info". In the information window a value can be found for "Media Framework".
You can install and remove any number of ELAN versions, they are independent of each other. The last change to the document format was in ELAN 3.5.0, when for attributes ISO DCR items where added. Previous versions of ELAN can be found by following this link, which is on the download page: http://www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/elan-old-versions.
