Problem with creating new annotations (On PCs)

Posted by juliehochgesang at 2009-03-02 20:40

Hello!

Two of the members in my transcription lab are working on PCs (A Dell laptop with Vista - home basic) and using ELAN 3.7.1. Sometimes when trying to enter a new annotation, they can't highlight at all. But when they activate an existing annotation (where the annotation line becomes blue), they can then create annotations again. This is happening with more than one eaf file.

I've tried the same eaf files that they were using on my mac laptop and another mac computer. On the mac laptops, we don't experience the same problem.

Any suggestions?

It shouldn't matter whether you're working on a PC or a Mac, if all is well. The only thing I can think of to explain the observed behaviour, is this: if a "time subdivision" (depending) tier is the active tier (light red background), you're only able to create a time selection in those areas where there is already an annotation on the parent tier. So, maybe activating a tier without a parent would help?

Hello Han,

Thanks for your speedy reply (as always :) )!

That's not the issue. I thought it might be about the parent/child tier relationships too but it happens (unpredictably) regardless if the tier's independent, parent, or child. And if the tier's a child tier, the transcribers know to check first to see if the parent tier has content (time-aligned) first.
