problems with the waveform viewer

Posted by laura at 2009-01-09 12:41

I have created from my .mpg video file an additional .wav file through a conversion program, but still not managed to see the waveform from the waveform viewer. I have been using the resolutions that Elan supports. Through other waveform programs eg. Praat are abel to show the waveforms. So I think the problem is in Elan but how I can solve it? After I have linked the .wav file to .mpg file the waveform viewer emerges to the Elan but the waveforms are just strait lines. What shoud I do?

The problem might either be in the compression type of the wav file or the bitrate?
If you open an eaf file in ELAN that has linked one of your .wav files and then close ELAN again, there should be some information about the wav file in ELAN's log file. This file can be found in:
Mac:<user_home>/Library/Preferences/ELAN
Windows:<user_home>\.elan_data\
and is named elan0.log (or elan1.log etc, find the most recent one).
In the log file there should be a line
"Information from header of wav-file:"
followed by some lines about the wav file. Especially the "Bitrate" and "WAVE Format" values are important. You could post the lines about the wav file here.

I found this information from elan0 -file:

Information from header of wav-file:
NrOfChannels : 2
Sample frequency: 48000
Bitrate : 24
nrOfSamples : 78936192
-> Length      : 00:27:24.504
WAVE Format : PCM (uncompressed)

I have tried to use different WAVE formats (both PCM and A-law) and bitrates (8,16 and 24 bits) but the result is always the same.

-laura-
Sorry, the last message came out quite unclear. So these was the information from header of wav-file:
NrOchannels:2
Sample frequency:48000
bitrate:24
nrOsamples:78936192
length:00:27:24.504
WAVE format: PCM (uncompressed)

I have tried to use different WAVE formats (PCM and A-law) and bitrates (8,16 and 24 bits) but the resolt is always the same.

Ok, format and bitrate(s) shouldn't be the problem. Difficult to tell what is problem then. Could you put one of the files somewhere on the web? We could do some testing here and try to find out if there is a bug in our waveform viewer.
(Or mail me a small file).
