Hello,
My students are facing some problems and I would appreciate your help:
We would like to use the CHAT conventions for transliterating/transcribing Arabic (see http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/manuals/chat.pdf; p. 88). What is the most efficient way to use the special characters required for this? They do not all seem to be part of the Arabic scripts. Can we first use English characters and then replace those special characters? Where should we get the special characters from if we do it like this?
Some students have recordings that were made with a hard-disc camcorder that produces wmv files. What is the best way to use them in ELAN: Should we convert them to MPEG 1 or MPEG 2 (using which tool?) and when/how should we lift off the audio (we normally use Virtual Dub to lift audio off MPG files)? And what are your current recommendations for converting
Someone changed the file associations for eaf-files on one of the machines and we cannot seem to associate them with ELAN again. Thus, when you now double click on an eaf-file, it will try to open them using Acrobat, which off course does not work. When you use “open with” or go to file properties and browse for the ELAN.exe-file, you find a file, but clicking on this file does not put ELAN on the list and does not seem to change the association. Can we do this in another way as it is very annoying that we now always have to open files from ELAN and cannot simply open them by double-clicking on them.

Concerning the 3 topics:
- You could either use one of the Arabic Input methods (e.g. by setting the "Default Language" of a tier). Or use Latin letters with some additional characters that are available in the "IPA Extended" input method of ELAN (www.lat-mpi.eu/tools/elan/ipa-extension). By right-clicking in an ELAN edit box and selecting the proper input method (language), a virtual keyboard should appear.
Copy and pasting from another application is also possible, maybe in combination with the search-and-replace function.
- MPEG1 is a common format, you could use that if you feel the quality is acceptable. You can find some information on possible tools in the Audio/Video section of this page: http://www.mpi.nl/corpus/a4guides/
- I think association of a file type with an application on Windows should work as you describe it.
The ELAN installer creates these entries in the Windows registry:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ELAN.EAF\Shell\Open\Command
with the value (e.g., the path depends on the installation)
"C:\Programma\ELAN 3.6.0\ELAN.exe" "%1"
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eaf
with the value
ELAN.EAF
In case you are familiar in using the "regedit" command (Registry Editor), you could search for these keys and their values. Maybe the "%1" is missing?
