Clearing selection (or the blue highlight) automatically

Posted by juliehochgesang at 2008-12-11 04:05

I'm using ELAN 3.6.0 on a MacbookPro with Leopard.

My question is related to the selection (or less technically, the blue highlighting that happens when you click and drag in the scroll view). I prefer using the keyboard over the mouse for most tasks. Now after I highlight a portion of the scrollview, either with the keyboard or mouse, often the highlight doesn't go away. To avoid "extending" this highlight over additional portions, I need to clear it before selecting a new portion. But sometimes I forget. Is there a way to get the highlight to disappear right after the annotation? (by setting up a preference to make the selection automatically disappear after doing something new?).

Hope this question is clear (sorry if this information is somewhere else in the forum or manual. I tried a few search terms "selection", "highlight", etc."). Thank you for your time.

This is currently not possible; you can either create a new selection by click-dragging with the mouse or by using the keyboard shortcut to clear the selection followed by the creation of a new selection (with the keyboard) etc.

But this could probably be added as a preference: clear the selection after creation of a new annotation. Are there other situations in which the selection should be cleared?

I think it'd be great to make it a preference for future versions of ELAN. I can't think of any other situation in which the selection would need to be automatically cleared though.

Thank you for considering this issue!
