Cannot start Elan 3.6.0 in Mac OS 10.5.5

Hi, I am a new user and have just downloaded and installed Elan 3.6.0 on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.5. There were no errors in installation, but when I try to start the Elan app, it crashes (see report below). I have tried making both Java 1.5 or 1.6 the default, but it still crashes.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. E.g., is anyone else out there running this configuration?

Is this with the latest Java update installed? I haven't updated my MacBook Pro to 10.5.5 yet, so I can't check. I hear from a colleague that on a desktop Mac Pro with 10.5.5 and the latest Java update ELAN works.
If you can't get it running at all, you could try launching ELAN with the shell script that is installed in same folder: ElanMac_3-6-0.sh. In a Terminal window "cd" to the ELAN install folder and type ./ElanMac_3-6-0.sh
Maybe that works.

Han, Thanks for the suggestion of trying the command line script. It starts up fine that way (after an initial file not found error in the log directory---small bug). But I wonder why the .app crashes with error above?<br>

I have updated my MacOS system to 10.5.5 and I don't experience the same problem.
When a crash occurs, I get the following output:

There is a difference in the "Code Type" value: could it be that you have been running the 64-bit version of Java 1.5? Have you tried the 32-bit version? (For other readers: can be set through /Applications/Utilities/Java/Java Preferences)?
If it works with the 32-bit version, but prefer to use the 64-bit version, you could try the following:
Copy the file: /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub64 to the ELAN .app folder. Right click ELAN.app and choose "Show Package Content", navigate to Contents/MacOS and paste the Stub file. Rename the "ELAN 3.6.0" file, and then rename "JavaApplicationStub64" to "ELAN 3.6.0". Launch ELAN. This might work, I haven't tried.

PS. do you know what file wasn't found with the first launch via the command line script? Was an error message shown?

Yes, I am one of the ELAN developers.
Increasing the initial heap size is probably a good idea anyway, will do so.
I'll see if I can locate the "missing file" bug; it is likely some kind of race condition, as you already suggest.
