Exporting to Toolbox

Posted by olesya at 2008-06-17 17:40

Hi,
I have just started using ELAN, so I am sorry in advance, if my question is too stupid.
I'd like to export an ELAN file to Toolbox and do my analysis in Toolbox (with a perspective or importing it back to ELAN later, after the analysis is done). I have already a Toolbox database for this language. In the manual, only the instructions of exporting BACK to Toolbox are provided, which is clearly not my case. I have tried to export following these instructions, but no success. A txt file is created with seemingly all the information from ELAN and some delimiters, but when I try to open it from my current Toolbox project, it is open but looks like empty.
So my question is: how can I export my ELAN file to Toolbox.
(My ELAN file contains only two tiers: orthography and translation.)
Thanks a lot!

There are 2 things you can consider:

- check the exported file in a text editor like WordPad or TextEdit. It should start with something like this:

\_sh v3.0 400 Text
\_DateStampHasFourDigitYear

\ref 001
\ELANBegin 0.000
\ELANEnd 1.000
\ELANParticipant ...
\tx ***
\ft ***

- if this is all correct the names of the tiers/markers should correspond to those specified by the Toolbox database file. I suppose that especially the record marker is important to be able to see anything in Toolbox.
So, are you sure that there is a tier in the ELAN file that has the same name as the record marker defined by the Toolbox project?

In general, if one has already a Toolbox database, it is probably best to start with creating a file in Toolbox with at least 1 or 2 (empty) records, import it into ELAN, add annotations and then export it back to Toolbox etc.
